Wentling Announces School Safety and Security Grant Recipients

May 1, 2019

HARRISBURG – Two school districts, Northwestern and Commodore Perry, that serve the 17th Legislative District are the recipients of school safety grants, Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer) announced today.

“The aim of these grants is to improve safety in our schools through a variety of initiatives,” Wentling said. “Though not every school district received funding in this round, all school districts that applied for grants previously received $25,000.”

Northwestern School District received a $39,065 grant and Commodore Perry School District received $26,000 in grant funding. Funding for the grants was established through Act 44 of 2018, for which Wentling voted.

Grants can be used for a variety of safety measures, including the hiring of school security officers, purchasing security-related technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students, and creating other programs to protect students.

In addition to the school grants, the Erie County Violence Prevention Project received a $185,816 Community Violence Prevention/Reduction grant.
