Nesbit, Wentling to Host April 28 Shredder Event
April 9, 2018
Identity theft tips, info to also be offered
MERCER – As a way for local residents to safely and securely have documents with personal and financial information shredded free of charge, Reps. Tedd Nesbit (R-Mercer/Butler) and Parke Wentling (R-Erie/Crawford/Mercer/Lawrence) will host a shredder event on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. to noon.
“In the past six years, identity thieves have stolen over $107 billion nationwide,” Nesbit said, referring to a 2017 study by Javelin Strategy and Research. “Our event is designed to help give consumers better peace of mind by having documents containing personal and financial information shredded and offering helpful tips to help guard against identity theft and fraud.”
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of the PennDOT Maintenance Building, located at 215 North Maple St., Mercer.
“Identity theft is a growing crime in the United States that costs consumers and businesses billions of dollars each year,” Wentling said. “Shredding important documents is a simple step to protect yourself from identity theft.”
According to the Insurance Information Institute, Pennsylvania ranks 17th in the number of reported cases of identity theft.
Iron Mountain is providing an on-site, shredding truck.
Documents that are encouraged to be shredded include those with credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, medical information and bank account information. Residents are asked to bring just papers and documents in loose form. Staples are acceptable.
Residents should not bring magazines, books or trash.
This is an event for residents only; no businesses please.
Information regarding ways to avoid identity theft will also be available.
