HARRISBURG – State Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer) issued the following statement after learning State Correction Institution (SCI) Mercer will remain open:

“I am very pleased with the decision to not close SCI Mercer. The prison has a stellar record of fiscal responsibility and has the lowest average daily cost to house an inmate of the five prisons that faced closure. Closing the prison would have had a far-reaching negative impact on its more than 400 employees, on Mercer County and the surrounding region. Closing SCI Mercer would not have produced the cost-savings being sought.

“I want to personally thank everyone, especially the state and local officials and corrections officers, who helped save the prison. This was clearly a cause worth fighting for and shows what can be done when we work together.”
