Wentling Announces Grant for Greenville’s Erie Lackawanna Railroad Depot
June 11, 2026
GREENVILLE – A $6,125 Keystone Historic Preservation Planning Grant has been awarded to Greenville Borough to help save the town’s former Erie Lackawanna Railroad Depot, now operated by Norfolk Southern, Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer) announced Thursday.
“This amazing railroad station is a major piece of not just Greenville’s history, but the region’s history,” said Wentling, who is a member of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which approved the grant and many others during a voting meeting Thursday in Titusville.
Wentling noted he is a “fourth-generation railroader,” going back to his great-grandfather, Parke Wentling, who worked for the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad as a supervisor of bridges and buildings in Butler.
“I’m grateful we’ve made it to this step after I helped stop its demolition and pulled together a coalition to give the depot a chance to be saved,” Wentling said, noting the structure had been targeted for demolition not long ago. “I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in this effort. It is my hope the historic structure report funded by this grant will help ensure the depot is brought back to its former glory, adding to the important history on display at the Greenville Railroad Park and Museum across the tracks.”
The project funded by the grant will document the depot’s historic significance, assess existing conditions and develop treatment recommendations consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s standards to guide future rehabilitation and preservation of this important transportation landmark.
