HARRISBURG – Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Mercer) announced the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has awarded a total of $17,078 to three volunteer fire departments in Mercer County. These grants are for helping Pennsylvania’s rural communities increase protection from wildfires, while encouraging fire safety across the Commonwealth.

The grants were awarded as follows:

• Clark Volunteer Fire Department: $2,309.
• Transfer Volunteer Fire Department: $9,394.
• West Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department: $5,375.

“Our volunteer firefighters work so hard to keep our communities safe, often while working other jobs full time” Wentling said. “This money will help these brave men and women pay for important tools to help protect us.”

Priority was placed on projects that include the purchase of wildfire suppression equipment and protective clothing. Grants may also be used for purchasing mobile or portable radios, installing dry hydrants, wildfire prevention and mitigation work, training wildfire fighters, or converting and maintaining federal excess vehicles.
