HARRISBURG – Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer) announced today that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) awarded nearly $6,400 in funding to Girard Borough, Erie County, to preserve and maintain Pennsylvania’s history. The money comes from the Keystone Historic Preservation (KHP) Grant Program.

“As someone who was appointed to serve as a commissioner on the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, I take great pride in preserving history in the Commonwealth,” Wentling said.

The funding would be used to maintain the borough’s Civil War monument that stands in the center of the town, which was commissioned by famous showman Dan Rice on Nov. 1, 1865.

“We would like to express our sincere appreciation for the opportunity to partner with PHMC on our Civil War monument restoration,” said Rob Stubenbort, manager of Girard Borough. “We appreciate the work that Rep. Parke Wentling did to help us. The grant will allow us to bring the monument back to its original beauty.”

KHP Grants provide funding to support projects that identify, preserve, promote and protect historic and archaeological resources in Pennsylvania for both the benefit of the public and the revitalization of communities. Funding also supports municipal planning initiatives that focus on historic resources, or it may be used to meet building or community-specific planning goals. The program also supports construction activities at resources listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. This fund is supported annually from a portion of the state realty transfer tax revenue.

The PHMC is the official history agency of the Commonwealth. It is responsible for the collection, conservation and interpretation of Pennsylvania’s heritage, which is accomplished through the State Archives, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums, the Pennsylvania Trails of History, the Bureau for Historic Preservation and the Bureau of Management Services.

The 17th Legislative District covers portions of Crawford, Erie, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
