Career Development Education Receives Boost Thanks to Grant Funding, Wentling says
CONNEAUT LAKE – Two workforce development boards in the 17th Legislative District received a combined $257,160 in Business-Education Partnership (BEP) grants to help fund career and technical education in the area, Rep. Parke Wentling (R-Crawford/Erie/Lawrence/Mercer) announced today.

“As a former industrial arts and technology education teacher, I have seen firsthand the importance of helping our students prepare for the workforce,” Wentling said. “These technical jobs, which provide family-sustaining pay, are the backbone of our middle class, which is the largest supporter of our economy.”

Grant funding includes $157,160 for the Northwest Workforce Development Board, which serves Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Forest, Venango and Warren counties, and $100,000 for the West Central Workforce Development Board, which serves Lawrence and Mercer counties. The funding will be used for the following programs:

  • The Northwest Workforce Development Board will use the funding to offer experimental opportunities to about 400 students to interact with manufacturing and health care employers and employees.

  • The West Central Workforce Development Board will convene strategic planning sessions with educators and employers with the main objective of developing a comprehensive approach to promoting awareness of high-priority career pathways and occupations in the local area.

BEP grants are federally funded and are to be used to increase awareness of in-demand technical careers. Specifically, the funding connects school districts with businesses to expand career development and employment opportunities.
